Pallet Racking Within a Chilled Storage Facility for Expanding Craft Brewing Company

Having worked for Northern Monk the previous year, WSL had gained a reputation for quality and reliability and they were consequently approached by Northern Monk to install a new racking system.

Northern Monk Brewing Co. Ltd is an innovative craft beer production company, offering a range of different beers, based (as the name suggests) on traditional northern brewing techniques, such as those found in ancient monasteries. The company combines millennia of these old brewing traditions with locally sourced ingredients and the most innovative technology and methods to create a range of beer that is making a name for itself worldwide.

Starting in a house cellar in 2013, in just five years business has boomed dramatically; now seeing the company exporting to 23 different countries. Expansion has required the growth of their Leeds-based storage premises with the purchase of a neighbouring building. This summer they expanded into this new building by renovating it to include a chill room for storing pallets of beer.

Having worked for Northern Monk the previous year, WSL had gained a reputation for quality and reliability and they were consequently approached by Northern Monk to install a new racking system. This was to be based in the brand-new chill room. WSL designed an optimised pallet racking layout for the room, enabling the storage of 252 pallets. The storage design was agreed by the Northern Monk management and the installation commenced.

The chill room was to be built immediately prior to the racking, with the job on a strict schedule due to the company needing the storage facility to be complete before the busy run up to Christmas. Timing was critical, as was co-ordinating with the chill-room contractors and with the Northern Monk warehouse management to ensure that everything ran smoothly and to time.

Originally the plan was for the chill room to be completed and lighting wired in before WSL could commence installing the pallet racking. Unfortunately, there were some delays with the chill room construction, pushing work back by a week.

However, the WSL project manager was able to postpone the materials that were needed for the pallet racking and co-ordinate the team availability for the installation, as well as pushing for a shorter completion time. This allowed the lighting contractors to complete their work once WSL had finished, but still within Northern Monk’s required time frame. With this effort, works were completed to the deadline, despite the change in timeline.

Ciaran Shier, Warehouse Packaging and Sustainability Manager at Northern Monk states:

“We are really pleased with all aspects of WSL’s work in installing our new racking. Everything from the planning and layout designs through to execution of the final works. We had various changes in dates of install from setbacks from other suppliers on our side and WSL were fantastic in accommodating us in these changes. I would highly recommend them.”

The end result of the project is a durable, well designed racking system consisting of 118m of chill room storage racking, suitable for the storage of 252 pallets. This keeps thousands of crates of beer at optimum temperature, enabling Northern Monk to keep offering its customers prompt deliveries of its unique, high-quality craft beers.
